Can fish oil supplements really boost your brain power?

Get the lowdown On GMTV 11th May 2005 Dr. Hilary Jones

A new report by Durham County Council and fish oil manufacturers Equazen reveals that fish oil supplements could improve brain power.

The report looks at the impact of fish oils on youngsters with learning difficulties and they show a dramatic improvement in concentration, reading and writing skills in those kids that took part.

The trials

The Durham trial was conducted by the local education authority and Oxford University and tested 110 children aged six to 12, who were selected from schools in County Durham on the basis of co-ordination problems.

Why are fatty acids essential?

In our fat-phobic world, many people do not realise that there are certain types of fat that are vital for living healthily. These are the two 'families' of essential fatty acids – omega-3 and omega-6.

Our bodies cannot make them, and so we have to get them from a dietary source. Fish and seafood are the main sources of the omega-3s, particularly the key ones for the eye and brain, EPA and DHA.

Green vegetables, certain nuts and oils are the dietary sources for omega-6 fatty acids. But even if you have a good dietary input of the parent fatty acids (LA and ALA), your body may not be efficient at metabolising them into the ones needed for optimal brain function.

Boost your kids Omega levels

Check your child's skin - if it is dry this is a sign of an Omega oil deficiency.

A child should eat about 200g of oily fish every week
Eggs are a good source of fatty acids. A six-year-old should eat four eggs per week, a 10-year-old could eat five
For snacks give your child pumpkin seeds
Add a heaped tablespoon of freshly ground pumpkin seeds and linseed to your child's cereal
Avoid fried foods
